“Maundy” comes from the Latin word “mandatum” from which we get the word mandate. Now, we could interpret tradition as calling this day “Mandate” Thursday because Jesus mandated Communion on this, the last night before He would be crucified. However, I think there is more to dive into. “Mandatum” is more properly translated as “command” or perhaps even better for this context, “commandment.” It is very true that Jesus mandated the observance of the Lord’s Supper on this evening, but there is a bit more to it.
